Monthly Checkup

What more exciting time to begin a blog than when you're pregnant?

I should've started this the day we found out, but alas, we're already 12 weeks along now--one day shy of 13, actually!--so I suppose a "second trimester and beyond" blog will have to suffice.

I had my third monthly checkup with my OB/GYN this past Monday. Jeff had originally planned to be in Las Vegas on business, so I'd asked my mom to accompany me, and when Jeff's business trip fell through, I couldn't bear to uninvite my mom; she was so excited! So the poor Dad-to-be had to sit this one out. He was a good sport about it, though, since he knew our first trimester screening--complete with another very detailed sonogram--was coming up in the next few weeks.

I was Dr. Schorlemer's very last appointment, so things were short and sweet. I got to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time, which was amazing. For some reason, it didn't sound as fast I'd expected, so I thought the number would be pretty low. It was, in fact, 176 beats per minute, which is on the higher side. (Goes to show how much I know!)

Mom charmed Dr. Schorlemer into doing an ultrasound even though there was really no reason for it other than our wanting to see the baby, and I was ecstatic when he agreed. The baby looks so much more like a baby now! And he/she was jumping around like a piece of popcorn. Seeing him/her move is always my favorite thing in the world; it's the ultimate proof that this little figure on a black-and-white screen is actually real.

Based on the size of the baby, our due date has reverted back to what it was originally--May 22nd--so we had to move our first trimester screening up a few weeks early. Not that I'm complaining! Two ultrasounds in one week? Sign me up!

Here are the sonogram pictures. The first and second ones are my favorites. The baby turned and looked at us right when the picture was being taken, so you can totally see his/her face!
